United Nations Recognises 12th December as UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE DAY

Last year, a petition was launched calling for recognition of 12th December as Universal Health Coverage Day. This December, United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution that finally declared 12th December, UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE DAY officially. UN’s vote doesn’t change the fact that millions of people still go bankrupt when they get sick. We all know we still have a lot of work to do. But official recognition for UHC Day is a sure sign that this movement has the staying power to transform societies.

In order to make the Healthcare Delivery System accountable and accessible to the poor and the elderly citizens in India a Pilot Initiative in Varanasi was launched in 2015 and a National Consultation with Experts from India & Overseas was organised from 09-11 August 2015 in collaboration with Government of India, Mata Anandamayee Hospital, Consumer Online Foundation and Partnership for Safe Medicines India Initiative.

Work was Initiated With 100 Villages on Sustainable Development. To date over 5000 patients have been enrolled using electronic health cards and medical records; both a Jan aushadhi store and a branded drug pharmacy have been set up on the hospital campus.

"It was a great honour to sign an agreement with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on 8th August 2017 to work with 100 villages on sustainable development. Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Girish Chandra Tripathi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Our project on Universal Health Coverage in Varanasi completes 24 months in partnership with Mata Anandamayee Hospital and Patient Safety and Access Initiative of India Foundation,” said Mr. Bejon Misra, Founder Director, Patient Safety and Access Initiative of India Foundation

Let’s all rise for our right to affordable, quality health care.Health is a human right that millions of people are still waiting for.No one should go bankrupt when they get sick.

Courageous political leaders support UHC so that citizens don’t have to choose between staying healthy and staying out of poverty. Every year, health costs push hundreds of millions of people into poverty and hold entire nations back. Leaders have a responsibility to end this cycle. We know that universal health coverage saves lives and lifts people out of poverty when leaders mobilize the resources to make it happen.

The right to affordable, quality health care belongs to everyone, everywhere. So does Health For All. Your health should never depend on who you are, where you live, or how much money you have. If we want health systems that benefit everyone, we need to hear from everyone. Community participation can make or break UHC reforms.

We all have a stake in building a healthier, safer world. Don’t stand on the sidelines – join the movement for #HealthForAll: UHCDay.org

The path to HealthForAll is not easy, but it is worth the struggle.

The strongest social movements have local roots. This UHCDay, we celebrated community activists pushing the world towards HealthForAll.

We partner with other communities, including those advocating for gender equity, primary health care, national security, fairer economies, the environment and more. Together, we spoke out for a shared goal.

The next generation of health breakthroughs will depend on putting the poorest and most marginalized people first. It’s time to invest in health systems that leave no one behind.By ending health injustices, we bring other global goals within reach. Let’s unite behind our shared vision of Health For All. A world without Health For All will never end poverty. Universal health coverage is essential to building a fairer and more prosperous future.
