Pharmacist arrested for selling banned medicines to kids

NEW DELHI, Jul 5, 2019: A pharmacist and his assistant have been arrested for selling banned medicines to children in east Delhi on Thursday. The pharmacy owner was caught with a stock of expectorants that were sold over the counter without a prescription.

Cops came to know about the source of the medicines after they caught a few teenagers consuming the drug at a park near Kalyanpuri.

DCP (east) Jasmeet Singh said that the shop owners have been identified as Sudeep Sharma and Sanjeev Sharma. It was found that they had "hired" the shop licence for Rs 3,000 from someone to run their pharmacy. During the inquiry, it was found that earlier drug inspectors who had visited their shop for a check were threatened and intimidated by the two men to get away with the forgery.

The incident came to fore when the area ACP was on patrol with his team. They spotted a few teenagers with a packet carrying vials of Avil medicines, two syringes and two extra needles.

Avil is used to treat allergies and contains a bit of a sedative, using which the teenagers got high. When they were confronted, the teenagers said the vials were sold to them by the medicine shop near New Ashok Nagar.

When Sharma was questioned, he denied having sold the medicines but when he was confronted, he admitted to have stocked medicines from the particular batch number.

Police have found that three other cases under JJ Act and Drugs and Cosmetics Act have been registered against them at New Ashok Nagar police station. Times Of India
