Meghalaya: BSF Seizes Phensedyl Worth Rs 1.21 Lakh From Indo-Bangla Border

Shillong, 1 March 2018: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday seized a consignment of Phensedyl worth 1.21 lakh, meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh, from Netri village in South Garo Hills district.

Acting on a tip off on the evening of Feb 28 about suspected movement of Phensidyl meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh, the BSF personnel deployed at Netri carried out anti-smuggling operation.

A mobile check post was laid by the troops to nab the suspected smugglers. But as soon as the BSF troops come to know about unloading of some consignment just near Mobile Check Post, they rushed towards the suspected place.

“Seeing the Bordermen, suspected smugglers fled from the spot. However, BSF troops seized 950 bottles of Phensedyl worth 1.21 lakh from the area. The Phensedyl was meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh when the alert sentinels of border managed to seize it,” read a statement issued by the BSF.

It is mentioned that the Phensedyl cough syrup is consumed in Bangladesh in large quantities, against the recommended small doses, to get a kick. With the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Bangladesh, Phensedyl addiction has been on the rise. Thus this drug is smuggled to Bangladesh to earn huge profit by the smugglers.

The Border Security Force has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent such illegal transporting of drugs and liquor along International Border in Meghalaya by launching frequent ops.

The seized items handed over to the concerned department for further disposal. thenortheasttoday.com
