FSSAI Directs States To Ensure Compliance Of Labelling Under FSS Nutra Norms

The apex food regulator of the country, FSSAI, has directed state food safety authorities across the country to launch a drive to ensure compliance of the labelling norms provisions for products under FSS (Food or Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food For Special Dietary Use, Food For Special Medical Purpose, Functional Foods and Novel Foods) Regulations, 2016.
The FSSAI has issued an order directing state food safety departments to ensure that FBOs dealing in the trade of products governed under the said regulations, must comply with the labelling provisions.
“You are directed to ensure strict compliance of the labelling provisions specified in the aforesaid FSS regulations for all licences under your jurisdiction,” says the order.
According to the FSSAI, the articles of food covered under these regulations are required to comply with the general labelling requirement under the FSS Packaging and Labelling Regulations 2011, as products such as health supplements, nutraceuticals, food for special dietary use or medical purpose, functional or novel food are intended for specific physiological condition or general maintenance of health and are required to be taken as per the regulated usage levels by the specific targeted group.
The order explains that the label on such articles under the said regulations shall specify the purpose, the target consumer group and the physiological or disease condition which they address and recommend duration or use. The label accompanying leaflet or other labelling and advertising of each type of article of food shall also provide sufficient information on the nature and purpose of the article of food and detailed instruction and precaution for its use and the format of the information given shall be appropriate for the intended consumer.
