Chennai: Blood cancer is completely curable and all can lead a normal life after successful treatment, doctors said during the Bone Marrow Transplant Survivor Children’s Meet organised by Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital (KKCTH) in Chennai on Tuesday.

Around 25 children and their parents attended the event conducted to create awareness about rare hematological disorders and blood cancer.

“We have successfully performed bone marrow transplants for children with complex disorders, including various types of immunodeficiency, immune dysregulation, uncommon bleeding disorders and metabolic conditions,” said hematologist Dr Deenadayalan M.

“Even in the absence of a fully matched family donor, outcomes have been good. Technological advances have reduced side effects in unrelated and half-matched donor transplants,” he said.

The transplant is a standard treatment for cancerous conditions like leukemia and lymphoma. Some children treated in the hospital were covered under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme or theTelangana Aarogyasri Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.

“There are challenges in obtaining funds for children who don’t have care schemes. In such cases, we seek support from philanthropic donors or crowdfunding agencies,” said hematologist Dr Meena Sivasankaran.
