6kg of meth meant for smuggling seized

Ramanathapuram: A special police team seized six kg of methamphetamine drug from a house in Vedhalai coastal village in Ramanathapuram district on Friday. Four people, including a woman have been arrested under the NDPS Act. The seized contraband is worth 5 crore in the international market.

Based on a tip-off that drugs are to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, the police team led by Rameswaram DSP S Umadevi and consisting of Mandapam SI T Sathishkumar, head constable K Kesavan and constables S Sampathkumar and K Bharathirajan raided the house of one Sethuraja, 50, from MGR Nagar in Vedhalai.

Police found six kg of methamphetamine drug hidden in the house. The drug was packed in one kg packs. Six packets were recovered.

Further investigation revealed that Sethuraja's son Nagakumar, 26, and his accomplice N Sakthivel, 25, from Soodavalaikuchu in Vedhalai had carried the contraband to the house. They travelled in a car from Vedhalai to Madhavaram in Chennai to procure the contraband. Nagakumar and Sakthivel have been taken into custody.

Based on the interrogation with them, police detained Sethuraja's wife Mariammal, 46, and their relative M Backiaraj, 29, from Soodavalaikuchu. Mariammal and Backiaraj were also accomplices in smuggling the contraband to Sri Lanka using the country boat owned by Nagakumar.

The special team is investigating to find out the suppliers of this drug to the smugglers.
