Solar D: New sunscreen with vitamin D

Feb 2016

A team of US researchers have discovered a new sunscreen formulation that helps the body to synthesize vitamin D while offering sunscreen protection. The sunscreen can prevent major health problems including skin cancer in all age groups.

According to Dr. Michael Holick, Professor at Boston University, Solar D contains several compounds that maximize vitamin D biosynthesis while preventing the harmful effects of sunlight and reducing erythema and/or sunburns.

Sunscreen formulations such as SPF30 are being used globally. These sunscreens contain several chemicals that can absorb UV-B radiation of varying wavelengths. Topical application of these formulations can reduce the body’s ability to produce the sunshine vitamin by nearly 98%.

In laboratory studies, Solar D has demonstrated up to 50% more production of vitamin D, compared to similar SPF. Reuters
