AIIMS Bhopal now a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for rare diseases

Bhopal: Union ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) has designated the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for rare diseases, according to a press release.
AIIMS Bhopalis the twelfth institute in India to be designated as a CoE for rare diseases.
It aligns with AIIMS objective to facilitate equitable access to high-quality medical care for individuals affected by rare diseases- often debilitating lifelong disease or disorder with a prevalence of 1 or less, per 1000 population, defined by WHO.
The CoE status will empower AIIMS, Bhopal to serve as a regional hub with facilities for diagnosing, preventing, and treating rare diseases.
It will include education and training of the medical personnel and patients to increase awareness about these disorders, leading to screening, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of rare disorders.
The activities under the centre will include research in low-cost diagnostics and therapeutics for rare diseases.
It will enable patients suffering from rare diseases to register for financial support for treatment from the government and other voluntary organisations.
