Indian Pharma Market Posts 3.5% Growth in Q1

Mumbai: India’s pharmaceutical market grew a modest 3.5% in the April-June quarter of FY24 as volumes dropped and sales of respiratory products cooled due to seasonal changes, according to market research firm AWACS.

The unit volumes were down 4.6% in Q1FY24. Along with re- respiratory, therapeutic segments such as anti-infectives, gastrointestinal, vitamins, and minerals, anti-diabetic, and derma saw a drop in volumes.

The market growth was largely driven by price hikes. The growth of price hike averaged 5.3% during Q1FY24. ECONOMIC TIMES, KOLKATA 11 JULY 2023

New Delhi: In a boost to conserve vultures in the country, the health ministry will soon come out with a notification to ban veterinary drugs Ketoprofen and Aceclofenac, people in the know told ET.

India’s drug technical Advisory board-Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) has recommended banning the drugs. “Under the recommendation, the health ministry will impose a ban on the use, sale, and manufacture of these veterinary drugs. A notification is likely soon,” the person said. A representation was made before the board requesting a ban on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) Ketoprofen and Aceclofenac for the treatment of livestock animals to conserve vultures.

In the representation, it was mentioned that Ketoprofen and Aceclofenac in cattle are as toxic as Diclofenac and can kill vultures. The study showed that Aceclofe- nac was rapidly metabolized in- to Diclofenac and Ketoprofen is toxic to Gyps vultures,

The same matter was also referred to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer's Welfare for their expert opinion. “The matter was examined by DAHD in consultation with the subject experts and it was recommended to impose a ban on the drugs,” said the minutes of the meeting.
