Constipation? Avoid these things!

Constipation is a condition of the digestive system where an individual has painful defecation that are infrequent or difficult to expel. In general, constipation is when a person is unable to completely empty their bowels. In most cases, this occurs because the colon has absorbed too much water from the food that is in the colon.

 

Constipation is considered the most common ailments which most of us have suffered, at one time or another. Most cases of constipation are treated by eating a diet high in fiber, drinking more fluids, and exercising daily.

 

While one may try certain things to improve their bowel movement, but it can worsen their constipation instead of getting relief from the pain. Here are some things one should never do while having constipation:

 

Taking painkillers

 

One should avoid taking painkillers for example, Aspirin and ibuprofen regularly as it can contribute to constipation.

 

Consuming dairy products

 

One should avoid consuming dairy products such as frozen desserts, cow’s milk and processed cheese as they have high lactose content which can lead to constipation, gas and bloating.

 

Eating processed foods

 

One should stop eating processed, frozen, convenience and refined foods like bread, pasta, crisps, microwave meals or ready meals as they contain high amount of fats which can slow down digestion and lead to constipation. Processed foods also contain fructans to increase their shelf life which may lead to constipation, bloating and gas.

 

Red Meat

 

There are plenty of reasons, one should avoid eating red meat as they are high in fats which takes longer for the digestive tract to process it and rich in iron which can be constipating. Too much iron in diet can make the stools hard.

 

Drinking coffee

 

Coffee often contains caffeine, which can be dehydrating, one should reduce their coffee intake when constipated. Proper bowel movements need sufficient hydration. So, water is considered the best thing to relieve constipation.
