Karnataka to utilise Namma Clinics for free healthcare services to identify NCDs early

Karnataka will utilise its 108 Namma Clinics for free healthcare services to identify non communicable diseases (NCDs) early. This is because the state is among the highest in the country for diabetics and other life style disorders like high cholesterol, blood pressure and obesity, which is extensively reported among the rural population.

Since there is considerable migration from the rural areas to the city, the government noted that One Namma Clinic can cater to 15,000 to 16,000 population. These 108 Namma Clinics will integrate all healthcare services under one roof and will be a go-to place for all medical needs of poor, underprivileged and middle class citizens, said health and medical education minister Dr.K.Sudhakar.

A total of 243 Namma Clinics are being set up in Bengaluru out of which 108 clinics are in the first phase. Remaining clinics will also be opened for public service in the next two weeks, said Dr. Sudhakar.

Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai inaugurated 108 Namma Clinics in an effort to give top priority to healthcare. The state government envisages that there is need for a further impetus to enhance healthcare infrastructure.

Namma Clinics will immensely help urban poor, labourers, daily wage workers and slum dwellers with its comprehensive primary care which includes promotive, preventive and curative aspects.

At present, there is one urban PHC catering to 50,000-60,000 population. With Namma Clinics being launched, we will have one clinic for every 15,000 to 20,000 population. We will also soon start special and dedicated clinics for women called 'Ayushmati Clinics', the minister said.

Further the concept of Namma Clinics will significantly enhance the quality and access of primary healthcare. About 12 different services will be available including antenatal and postnatal care, prevention of NCD, communicable diseases management, immunization, etc.

Major initiatives are on to have one Namma Clinic in each of the 198 wards which means 'health in your Ward' for all Bengalureans. We are on a mission to make children free from vision and hearing disabilities. We have already treated 500 blind and deaf children. More than 30,000 people are availing dialysis treatment in the state. Over 33 lakh people have availed free treatment in the last one year and government has spent more than Rs. 1,500 crore on the treatment, the minister said.

The government sees that the Namma Clinics will usher a public health revolution in our state. This comes close on the heels of Brand Bengaluru which is the government’s priority. In this regard, the Minister urged everyone to visit Namma Clinic at least once in a year and get checked for onset of any metabolic disorders. Early diagnosis of diabetes and hypertension can prevent major ailments or minimise fatal complications that may occur in the future, he said.  Pharmabiz
