Tripartite agreement signed to give boost to pharma project in Pondicherry

Chennai, November 17, 2022:

The government of Pondicherry, which has been trying to establish one pharma park to give a boost to the local manufacturing units, has now signed a tripartite agreement between health department, education department and industry department for setting up an Integrated Green Pharmaceutical Innovation Research Park at Sedrapet.

The agreement is to provide technical support to the development of infrastructure facilities to realize the park project, says the state drug controller U Anantha Krishnan.

According to the drug controller, who takes the initiative with the government for bringing up the Pharmapark in association with Pondicherry drugs manufacturers association (PDMA), the MoU between the three institutions will support to establish facilities such as common testing facilities, common warehouse, effluent treatment plant, logistic facilities, training centre, etc. The government has already identified one hundred acres of land at Sedrapet. Financial support is provided by both the central and state governments.

The MoU signing ceremony was held on November 14 at the office of the health secretary at the secretariat. Industry leaders were also present on the occasion.

Representing the departments, the officers signed the MoU included the state drug controller U Ananda Krishnan, vice chancellor of the Pondicherry University of Technology Dr. P Mohan and the director of the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute in the union territory, Dr. C Udayashankar.

While briefing Pharmabiz about the tripartite agreement, the DC said the government at the UT has been working for the pharma cluster for the last several years and the union government has already given approval for the project with a consent for an ayush cluster also along with. The Pharmapark is a combined project in a cluster form for formulations and medical devices. Last month the chief minister himself had called a meeting of the beneficiaries who included 113 manufacturers of pharmaceuticals. According to sources, the park project requires ?500 crore to complete the work.

As regards the pharma units in the union territory, Ananda Krishnan said the government sees very good scope for the industry to become world class entrepreneurs to manufacture and market good quality pharmaceuticals and allied products to international markets. He said considering the potential of the union territory, industry stalwarts from Maharashtra, Gujarat , Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Karnataka are expected to be part of the stakeholders. He further said the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council has already extended all support to the Pondicherry government's pharma park project.PharmaBiz
