Risk Vs Benefits of Aspirin Revealed

April 2016

Daily aspirin takers can get more benefit than harm, a group of independent experts at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) announced. The primary benefits of daily aspirin use such as prevention of colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) can potentially outweigh the risk of bleeding risks in certain individuals.

The panel’s recommendations were based on three review studies that reaffirmed the efficacy of aspirin in prevention of first-time ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, colorectal cancer and related mortality. Although, the increased risk of developing major bleeding risks and hemorrhagic stroke cannot be ruled out.

Regular aspirin use has resulted in improved quality of life and reduced illness but with significant bleeding risk between the ages of 40 and 69 years. Improved quality of life was observed in both genders that started aspirin use between 40 and 59 years of age and CVD patients at the ages of 60-69 years. Based on the recommendations, clinicians must share their clinical decision with patients’ to make informed decision and preference. Drugsupdate.com
