Private hospitals seek clarity from Centre, vaccine makers Bharat Biotech and SII

April 10, 2022:

With two key vaccine makers slashing the prices of their Covid-19 shots on Saturday, private hospitals are in a fix as the current stock was purchased at previously approved government rates.

Leading hospitals said that they would start administering precautionary doses from Monday as they await clarification regarding the price.

"As of now, we have not received any communication from the authorities or the vaccine makers on the process for receiving and administering precaution doses to 18 plus, or on the new cost," Fortis Healthcare said in a statement. "We will resume the vaccinations as soon as we receive clarifications, hopefully by Monday," it added.

The hospital chain said its current vaccine stock was purchased at the earlier government-set rates.

Bharat Biotech had earlier priced its Covaxin at ₹1,200 per dose, while Serum Institute of India (SII)'s rate for Covishield was ₹780 for private hospitals. The prices also included a Rs 150 service charge.

However, SII and Bharat Biotech on Saturday cut the prices of the precautionary dose of their respective Covid-19 vaccines to ₹225 per shot for private hospitals after consultations with the government.

Bharat Biotech said private hospitals should provide Covaxin at the revised rate effective April 10. It said any price differential with existing stocks of Covaxin in private hospitals shall be compensated in the form of additional doses. The company added that fresh stocks of Covaxin were available and ready for supply. ET Health
