India needs to take leadership role in cannabis use for medical therapies: Shivam Singhee

Bengaluru, April 7, 2022:

India needs to take a leadership role in cannabis use for medical therapies. This is because cannabis has made a dent on the pharmaceutical industry in the US and Canada. A similar trend prevails across many other countries like Thailand, South Africa, Spain and Uruguay. Hence, India cannot afford to lag behind. The country needs to gear up for the transformative future to become one of the leading cannabis wellness markets in the world, said Shivam Singhee, co-founder & CEO, Awshad.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound derived from cannabis. These CBD-derived wellness products are flooding the global markets to combat the rising modern-day lifestyle disorders. Scientific studies worldwide over the past few decades indicate that the cannabis plant offers numerous health benefits. One of the most common products that has become popular in recent times is CBD, he added.

Globally too, India needs to buck up to take a leadership role in cannabis use for medical therapies CBD based oils and supplements are prescribed as an alternative therapy to pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders. This has been preferred over antibiotics and painkillers that usually have serious side-effects Additionally, CBD has been proven useful for cancer patients to battle the severe and painful symptoms of chemotherapy. There is a huge gap between what people are looking and the medications offered by today’s doctors and pharmaceutical companies. CBD is bridging this gap as these health and wellness products are not only safe to use daily, but have virtually no side-effects and are completely non-addictive, Singhee told Pharmabiz.

Currently those suffering from anxiety, depression, insomnia and chronic pain are usually offered strong opioids (Opium-based drugs) that may have dire long-term consequences and often lead to addiction. We have seen the backlash of over prescribed opioids in the market in the western countries; and Indians do not need to walk through that trail. Cannabis is an extremely versatile plant that has its roots in the ancient knowledge of Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, he said.

Unlike other natural and chemical drugs that are ingested, cannabis has natural receptors in the bodies attached to the endocannabinoid system (ECS), namely CB1 and CB2 receptors. This means all mammals were evolved with natural receptors for cannabis compounds that help engage with the CBD molecules and eases the nervous system to make it calm and thus also assists the body to heal itself, he explained.

But it is the arbitrary geo-politics, gross misinformation and misaligned laws that have deprived the public of cannabis healthcare products for decades. We have an opportunity, and in turn a responsibility to rectify our stance on cannabis and move ahead with the rest of the world, noted Singhee.
