TS govt funds for integrated medicine development for black fungus

Hyderabad, September 7, 2021:

The state government of Telangana has funded for the development of new medicine with the integration of allopathic and ayurvedic systems to find an effective cure for the dreaded black fungus disease in Covid cured patients in the state.

As it is aware, most of those patients who have recovered from the critical stage of Covid disease are becoming vulnerable to the black fungus disease due to excessive use of steroids and various antibiotics during their treatment. The state government of Telangana has funded a research, which was taken up by the department of Ayush, to treat patients suffering from black fungus with a mix of allopathic and ayurvedic medicines.

According to Dr Allagu Varshini, Commissioner of Ayush, Government of Telangana, as many as 137 patients have been under clinical trials at two government hospitals ENT Koti in Hyderabad and Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad. And the results have yielded positive signs of effective cure.

“The interim analysis of the clinical study, which is an idea that was mooted by Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao to treat black fungus infected, has yielded positive results. We are giving ayurvedic based medicines as an adjunct to the already existing treatment modalities to the black fungus infected patients. The results are very much positive, informed the Ayush Commissioner.

The preliminary results of the clinical study on 92 patients at ENT Hospital and 45 patients at Gandhi Hospital have indicated significant reduction in mortality, drop in disease progression, recurrence, and reduction in fungal load, side effects and reduction in toxicity, observed senior doctors from allopathic and ayurvedic streams who are examining the clinical trial research to find out unique and innovative mix of allopathic and ayurvedic medicine to treat the black fungus infection in patients.

The Ayush Commissioner says that this is a unique and first of its kind clinical study involved creating different treatment regimes of allopathic and Ayush streams to two different set of mucormycosis patients.

The clinical trials are conducted on two sets of black fungus infected patients. One of them includes non-Covid mild and moderately infected patients at Gandhi Hospital at ENT Koti Hospital, while the other set of patients included severely infected Covid positive patients with black fungus at Gandhi Hospital.
