According to a report in the Boston Globe, Sproxil Inc., based in Cambridge, has introduced scratch-off labels in India, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and parts of South America. The millions of scratch off labels Sproxil has produced for big pharmaceutical companies in India and Africa have increased drug sales. According to a New York Times report, which argues that while only about 10% of the buyers actually cross check the codes via text messaging, the verification mechanism promotes consumer confidence. In Nigeria, counterfeit drugs in pharmacies had gone down after scratch-off labels were introduced, it was reported by inspectors .
