Jaipur all set to get drug test lab

Jaipur, 2 July: After a long wait of 30 years the drug testing lab at Jaipur has now acquired the facility of conducting microbiological investigations also. Till now drugs samples were being sent to Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata for testing but since the past six months the CDL had started refusing outside samples for testing.

"The new microbiological lab will be functional soon as we have got the calibration certificate now," an official at the drug testing lab in Jaipur said.

According to experts, around Rs. 200 crore business of spurious and sub-standard medicines is flourishing across the state and the Drugs Control Department till now was not even equipped to test antibiotics, eye drops, vaccines, anti-retrovirals, vitamins, anti-oxidants, immunoglobulin, devices and other medicine in the state. There are 311 manufacturing units, 15,900 retail and 10,950 wholesale outlets of medicine in the state.

"Now the lab at Jaipur will be able to test injections, IV fluids, eye drops and antibiotics. We are hopeful that the other testing facilities of more complicated drugs will also be available in the state in coming time," an official said.

Health department has released a budget of more than Rs1 crore for the lab two years ago but the work could not be completed due to disputes between head of the lab and the PWD which has built the building of the new lab.
