Silent killer- non communicable diseases

According to a new study, it has been examined how life-threatening diseases have changed in India and found that infectious or communicable diseases are no longer our biggest threat. In India, from 1990 to 2016, non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as heart disease, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases have caused most deaths in a year. Heart disease has long been ranked as the top killer in India. The report measured the inputs in disease burden, which is measured in DALYs i.e. disability-adjusted-life-years, the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death.

Government forms committee to study drugs marketed in country towards creating OTC categoryMumbai, November 2017: Based on the deliberations of 52nd meeting of drugs consultative committee (DCC) held recently in Delhi, government formed a sub-committee comprising of five state drug controllers which will soon start examining the drugs marketed in country vis-a-vis conditions for sale stipulated under various schedules like H, H1, G, X, K. The committee will recommend the list of drugs which may be considered for marketing as OTC along with conditions to be followed.Read More

Bill to regulate private hospitals tabled in Karnataka assemblyBelagavi (Karnataka), November 2017: A modified amendment Bill to regulate the functioning of private hospitals across Karnataka was introduced in the state legislative assembly here on Tuesday. Tabling the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act 2007 (Amendment) Bill 2017 to regulate the healthcare system in the state, Health and Family Welfare Minister K.R. Health ministry introduces daily drug regimen for treatment of tuberculosisMumbai, November 2017: The Union health ministry has launched daily regimen for tuberculosis (TB) patients across the country under The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP). The ministry has been providing the thrice weekly regimen for the treatment of TB. However it has now decided to change the treatment strategy for TB patients from thrice weekly to daily drug regimen using fixed dose combinations (FDC) for treatment. This change will bring transformation in the approach and the intensity to deal with this disease which accounts for about 4.2 lakh deaths every year. Read More

Water test may help prevent bone disease in India NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 2017: A simple colour-changing test to rapidly detect fluoride in drinking water may help prevent a crippling bone disease, in developing countries such as India, scientists have said. Banning combination drugs: A high-stakes case in pointNew Delhi, November 2017: A bench of the Supreme Court consisting of Justices Rohinton Nariman and S K Kaul is currently hearing an appeal against the judgment by a single judge of the Delhi High Court setting aside the government’s ban of 344 fixed dose combination (FDC) drugs. The high court had set aside the ban on the grounds that the government did not consult the statutory bodies established under the Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940, (DCA) before issuing the ban orders under Section 26A of Act. This is a high stakes litigation for public health in India and if the Supreme Court does uphold the government’s ban, it will mark a milestone in the battle to restore the rule of law to the shockingly unregulated FDC market. November 2017: There is widespread fear within the law enforcement and medical communities that the proliferation of counterfeit opioid pills have been sickening and killing people around the U.S., reports the Washington Post. Counterfeit medicines made with fentanyl have already been found in 80% of the states in the country with deaths in 16 states.
