LONDON: A recent case of counterfeit medicine suggests that a brand name on the package is no guarantee of the quality of the product. Parcels containing counterfeit medicines to treat erectile disfunction were seized at Coventry Airport in the United Kingdom Border Agency Staff, leading to the arrest of Victor Cheke, 42, to whom the parcels were addressed. Cheke, who pleaded guilty, has been sentenced to one year in jail. Notwithstanding the brand name on the packages, analysis of the contents showed them to be counterfeit, according to the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency). Danny Lee-Frost, Head of Operations at MHRA, advised the public to purchase medicines only from bona fide outlets, and with a proper prescription.
