Tamiflu now available at chemist outlets against a prescription :

New Delhi :

Oseltamivir phosphate, also known as Tamiflu - the only known medicine for effectively treating the H1N1 swine flu and H5N1 bird flu - is to be shifted from Schedule X to Schedule H of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, as per a decision taken by the Drug Technical Advisory Board (DTAB).

In order to prevent indiscriminate use of Tamiflu, its sale, as a Schedule X drug, had been confined to the 480 chemist outlets authorized to sell drugs in Schedule X. The drug had to be kept under lock and key at these outlets and records had to be maintained of purchases over a two year period. As a Schedule H drug, Tamiflu can now be stocked by all chemists in the country, but sold only against a prescription by a medical practitioner. The decline in the incidence of swine flu was the reason for the change in the scheduling of the drug, according to the DTAB. Significantly, India has indigenously developed a swine flu vaccine, the DTAB also affirmed.
