  Govt. extends deadline for pharma barcode
NEW DELHI, 2013: The government has extended the deadline for one more year to affix barcodes on primary level packaging by pharmaceutical companies till July 2014. A barcode helps in tracking and tracing of origin of drugs, which in turn helps in minimizing the chances of genuine drugs being considered spurious, sub-standard or counterfeit. WASHINGTON, APR, 2013: US enforcement agents working with Pfizer seized $3.6m-worth of counterfeit medicines in a raid on a South Carolina warehouse last month. The operation uncovered counterfeit versions of Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug Viagra (sildenafil), Eli Lilly's ED product Cialis (tadalafil) and Merck & Co's Proscar (finasteride), which is used to treat symptoms of enlarged prostate. UNSAFE Medicines are classified as SSFFC ( Substandard/ Spurious/ Falsified/ Falsely labeled/ Counterfeit ) . There is a marked difference between a substandard medicine and the remaining four. Substandard medicines results from poor manufacturing with no intent to deceive while the remaining SFFC medicines are made by people with the intent to mislead.
