Paying tribute to our former President Dr.APJ ABDUL KALAM , I dedicate this issue to him. His selfless service to all shall always inspire PSM INDIA to move forward in the same direction, with the same spirit... towards a healthy nation, a nation of safe medicines and quality healthcare!
I take this oppurtunity in reaching out to all our esteemed subscribers of The PRESCRIPTION to join PSM India’s movement at Varanasi from 9th to 11th August, 2015 where we shall be focusing on improving access to quality healthcare for all under the National Health Assurance Mission. For the first time in India a public initiative on Universal Health Coverage for the poor and elders is being organised. PSM India is working here in collaboration with the Governement of India. We lost a true leader Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The Nation mourns on HIS passing away and the void can never get filled by any other person. He once said "even if one person dies because of spurious medicine it is a serious issue". It was 3rd October 2011 in one of our event in New Delhi he mentioned about the unethical practices adopted by certain medical practitioners by prescribing irrational diagnostic tests, he called it the DIAGNOSTIC PAIN for patients. We shall MISS HIM and PRAY TO GOD for HIS SOUL TO REST IN PEACE. Nation has lost a great SON. OUR DEEP CONDOLENCE from PSM India Initiative.

Physician's samples worth Rs. 3cr were on sale at Gaya Patna, 17 July 2015: Seizures made during the raids in Gaya earlier this month have baffled the Drug Control authorities as barring one or two drugs, the entire seized consignment is of physician's samples, not spurious drugs as reported initially. Though the exact assessment is yet to be made, sources said the seized drugs are worth Rs. 3 crore.

Indians at higher risk of getting fake drugs July, 2015: Indian residents are at a greater risk of getting a fake drug. According to a study by Pharmaceutical Security Institute ( PSI), a US-based non-profit organisation established by 28 International research-based pharmaceutical manufacturers, India is the third largest country in the world with the most counterfeit drugs in 2014.

Tamil Nadu tops in deaths due to drug overdoseChennai, July 2015: Tamil Nadu seems to be taking the saying 'physician, heal thyself' to an all new level, with an increasing number of people self-medicating - and killing themselves in the process. With 205 deaths in 2014, the state recorded the highest number of deaths related to drug overdose, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. At least 80% of them were caused by popping pills intended to heal.

13 dead, 22 affected by Japanese Encephalitis in AssamJuly 2015: Altogether 13 persons have died and 22 have tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam's Jorhat district during the last 10 days, Joint Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mobibur Rahman said here on Tuesday.

IPC recommends caution on 3 lifesaving drugs in market to CDSCO based on ADRsJuly, 2015: Indian Pharmacopeia Commission’s (IPCs) signal review panel recently submitted strategic recommendation to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on the 3 important life saving drugs running in the market. These reports were submitted based on the detailed observation made by the expert panel following the adverse drug reaction (ADR) report generated from different ADR centres across the country.

Ministry of Health launches MvPI to monitor safety of medical devices Mumbai, 15 July 2015: In a strategic move to protect the health of the patients, the Ministry of Health & Family welfare approved the commencement of the ambitious Materiovigilance Programme of India (MvPI) to monitor the safety of medical devices in the country. The MvPI was formally launched on July 6 at Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad by Dr G N Singh, Drug Controller General of India (DCGI).

Stroke patients are being prescribed with ineffective drugs in North India According to an AIIMS study, over eight lakh stroke patients in North India are being treated with neuroprotective drugs that are not recommended by current clinical practice guidelines. The study was conducted by Dr. Kameshwar Prasad, AIIMS, and the study duration was two years.

Antibiotics may cause juvenile autoimmune arthritis July 2015:Antibiotics therapy may increase of developing juvenile arthritis (autoimmune) by two folds, according to a recent study published in Pediatrics.
Apart from genetic inheritance risk, environmental factors can also play a vital role in the onset of autoimmune juvenile arthritis, the study noted.

Anti-ulcer drug may prevent stomach cancer July 2015: A short course of two medicines commonly used to eliminate the bacterium that causes ulcers may reduce the risk of stomach cancer, research shows.
Stomach, or gastric, cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer worldwide, and people who are infected with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium are more likely to develop the disease.

At least 20 detained in China fake drug crackdown Beijing, July 2015: Chinese police have detained over 20 people in its latest crackdown on the production and online trading of fake drugs, the public security authorities in the eastern province of Zhejiang said Sunday.

FDA Strengthens Warning of Heart Attack and Stroke Risk for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory DrugsJuly, 2015: FDA is strengthening an existing warning in prescription drug labels and over-the-counter (OTC) drug facts labels to indicate that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that can increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke, either of which can lead to death. Those serious side effects can occur as early as the first few weeks of using an NSAID, and the risk might rise the longer people take NSAIDs. (Although aspirin is also an NSAID, this revised warning doesn’t apply to aspirin.)

In the past three months, notices have been issued to 35 drug manufacturing companies for allegedly manufacturing drugs of sub-standard quality and supplying them in the state.

Analysis shows several medicines in market unstandardized, admits Maharashtra government Mumbai, 23 July 2015: The medicines available in the market may not be as safe as you think.
The state government has admitted that an analysis of medicines available in the market revealed that a significant number of drugs manufactured in Maharashtra as well as in other states, such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, turned out to be unstandardized.

Scientists have developed an eye drop that can dissolve cataracts July 2015: Researchers in the US have developed a new drug that can be delivered directly into the eye via an eye dropper to shrink down and dissolve cataracts - the leading cause of blindness in humans.

Answer: The size and shape of nanoparticles affect their bioactivity and toxicity. Substances become more reactive as their particles get smaller because the surface area is greater relative to the volume, providing a larger surface on which chemical reactions can occur. Their ability to interact with living systems increases because they can often penetrate the skin, enter the bloodstream via the lungs, and cross the blood/brain barrier. Once inside the body, there may be further biochemical reactions, such as the creation of free radicals that damage cells and DNA. Also, while the body has built-in defences for natural particles it encounters, nanotechnology is introducing entirely new substances that the body cannot recognize or be able to deal with.
Therefore, though there is no doubt that nanoparticles have interesting and useful properties and may bring great benefits, but their possible adverse effects cannot be ignored and research on the matter is ongoing.
