Frequently Asked Questions Q1. What are ANTACIDS ?
Answer: Antacids are taken by mouth to relieve heartburn and flatulence, the major symptom of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or acid indigestion. Antacids either directly neutralize acidity by increasing the pH, or reversibly reduce or block the secretion of acid by gastric cells to reduce acidity in the stomach.
Q2. Is consuming too much of antacids safe?
Answer: Though, antacids are a broad category of over-the-counter medications and are usually therapeutically safe, but excessive consumption can upshot unforeseen consequences. Repeatedly taking of antacids can cause change in bowel habits (diarrhoea or constipation), damage to kidneys (milk-alkali syndrome), increased acid production, decrease in the absorption and efficacy of other prescribed medicines, or alternate, increase in the absorption and toxicity of other medications.
Therefore, a gentle advice from PSM India Desk that instead of popping antacid pills all day, a bit of lifestyle changes like avoiding certain foods like tomato products, caffeine, chocolate , citrus juices and losing weight can lessen the frequency of heartburn. But, if acidity persists for longer time period, there is need to seek advice of physician or gastroenterologist as it may be an indication of bigger chronic gastrointestinal problem and with enough antacids the pain from peptic ulcer disease and even possibly stomach cancer shall be masked, thereby delaying diagnosis and treatment.
