 FDA sting traps makers of ‘bogus’ drug
MUMBAI, Sept 2013: After trying in vain for days to locate the distributors of a bogus 'de-addiction powder' adversited on TV, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Mahesh Zagade decided there was only one way to nab them - order a batch of the product himself. Zadage carried out his 'sting' last week, following which FDA officials seized a consignment of the "spurious" product worth Rs 12 lakh.
 More than 1 lakh banned tablets seized at chemist shops
BHATINDA, Sept, 2013: The police and the health department conducted raids at various places to curb the use of banned drugs in the city. The exercise is aimed to curb the sale of banned and unauthorised drugs at chemist stores. Bathinda SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar teamed up with drug inspector, deputed at the stores.
Raids at chemist shops fleecing cancer patients
FARIDKOT, SEPT 2013: Concerned over the rising complaints of cancer patients getting fleeced, a team of drug officials raided the chemist shops situated in the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College at Faridkot. The health authorities had got large number of complaints about chemists selling medicines at exorbitant rates.
Two booked for selling banned sedatives
NAGPUR, SEPT 2013: Tehsil police have registered offence of causing hurt by means of poison against two persons for allegedly dealing in sedatives banned by the central government. Stock of the banned sedative was seized during a raid by drug inspector Shehnaz Taji at the medical shop owned by Manoj Amarnani at Jagnath Budhwari.
 Sale of acid to be strictly regulated by States
Sept 2013: The Home Ministry has asked the State governments to ban over-the-counter sale of acids as directed by the Supreme Court in its July order to curb growing incidents of attacks on women. Besides bringing the sale of acid under The Poisons Possession And Sales Rules, 2013, thereby including at least a dozen acids in the list of poisons to curb their sale, the Ministry has asked the States to sternly deal with acid sellers who fail to comply with the guidelines. India may join global forum to safeguard drug exports
Sept 2013: India is considering joining a global forum that prescribes standards for medicine manufacturing to safeguard its drug exports to the member countries. Called the Pharmaceutical Inspection Convention and Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S), it currently comprises 43 drug-importing countries. Sep-2013 : An ongoing effort to harmonise medicines regulation in Africa could increase access to drugs but lacks critical post-marketing surveillance provisions, according to the World Health Organisation. The African Medicines Registration Harmonization (AMRH) initiative first set up in 2009 is trying to develop a unified platform for registering new drugs which should speed up the availability of new medicines. An examination of nearly 1 million birth records revealed a 3-fold increased risk for tetralogy of Fallot among infants whose mothers took fluconazole in the first trimester, according to a study published in the August 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
