Delhi Police nab pseudoephedrine drug racket mastermind, accomplices
DELHI, Oct 2013: An alleged mastermind behind a drug trafficking racket has been arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell along with his two accomplices following seizure of 200 kg of pseudoephedrine worth Rs.10 crore in the international market. The accused supplied the precursor to party drugs, methamphetamine, to northeastern States and Myanmar.
Illegally operating drug factory sealed
SHIMLA, OCT 2013: The drug controlling authority of Himachal Pradesh raided a pharmaceutical unit in Sirmaur district and found out that illegally manufactured drugs were being supplied to government hospitals of Chhatisgarh, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh. Following the raid, the authority sounded national alert to alert other state governments.

MUMBAI, 30 SEPT 2013: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), on specific information, raided a godown of a courier agency on Saturday night in Chakala, Andheri and seized 25 kg of banned narcotic substance Methaqualone valued at around `12 crore. The parcel was destined for London. The AIU officials have succeeded in apprehending two people in this connection from the western suburbs.
Himachal Pradesh High Court stays Drug Controller General of India's order on combination drugs
NEW DELHI, OCT 2013: The government's efforts to weed out 'potentially unsafe' combination drugs for which pharma companies have not taken the central drug regulator's permission by September 30 has run into a wall. The High Court of Himachal Pradesh on September 27 granted an interim stay on Drug Controller General of India's (DCGI's) directive of July, which intended to dub all those combination drugs as 'illegal' for which drug makers have not filed safety and efficacy data with the central drug regulator by September 30.
Madras high court refuses to stay central ban on painkilling cancer drugs
CHENNAI, OCT 2013: A central notification imposing temporary ban on two top cancer drugs, together accounting for annual business of about Rs 268 crore, cannot be interfered with, the Madras high court has ruled. The products - spasmo-proxyvon and proxyvon - are widely used primarily for the relief of high fever, headache and extremely acute pain arising out of cancer and other similar oncological conditions or acute pain due to orthopedic conditions and complex fractures.
A unique number in the offing to control drug pilferage
NEW DELHI, 2013: In a novel method to stop pilferage of controlled narcotic drugs, the government has decided to issue a Unique Registration Number (URN), on the lines of the unique citizen identity 'Aadhar', to persons engaged in the business and operations of these drugs. The URN will be issued by the NCB, which is the national agency tasked to curb the menace of illicit drugs and enforce stringent anti-narcotics laws in the country.
