‘Miracle doctor’ booked after FDA busts him for TV advertisements
MUMBAI, March 2014: The Food and Drug Administration on Friday filed an FIR against 'miracle doctor' Munir Khan after television advertisements claiming his 'Body Revival' medicine cured cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes and other life threatening diseases resurfaced. Last year, the Bombay High Court had allowed the sale of his medicine on condition that he should not 'exaggerate its benefits'. The FDA claimed that Khan's new advertisements are violating the HC's diktat.
Haryana unearths cough syrup diversion to Bangladesh
CHANDIGARH, March 2014: In a crackdown against abuse of medicinal intoxicants, Haryana's Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Sunday said it has unearthed illicit diversion and transportation to Bangladesh of huge quantities of a cough syrup made and sold by a multinational pharmaceutical giant.

Drug store partners fined
MANGALORE, 2014: The Sullia JMFC court on Wednesday fined partners of a medical store Rs 40,000 for selling drugs without a licenced pharmacist and also substituting the drug. The court held guilty partners of Sai Ganesh Medicals, Sullia, Hubert Ronald D'Souza and Cecilia Mildred D'Souza and sentenced them till rising of the court after imposing the fine.
Nine-month-old dies after polio vaccination
JAIPUR, 2014: A nine-month-old infant died within minutes of swallowing polio drops in Bhilwara district on Sunday triggering panic among the villagers. An anganwadi worker administered polio drops to several children in Itunda village in Jahajpura tehsil under the national immunization day programme when the newborn, Rohit Raigar, who swallowed polio drops, died within minutes.
Maharashtra FDA urges MSPC to cancel registrations of pharmacists for doing dual employment
MUMBAI, March 2014: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has written a letter to the Maharashtra State Pharmacy Council (MSPC) to cancel registrations of 10 offending pharmacists against whom FIRs were lodged for pursuing dual employment and putting patient safety at risk. MSPC Executive Committee has quasi judicial powers to take action against the offending pharmacists ranging from issuing warning letters to cancellation of registration as per section 36 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948.

Special surveillance drive by CDSCO on manufacturing sites report 2.3% samples only substandard quality

NEW DELHI, March 2014: A special drive of surveillance on manufacturing sites by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) spread across the country has found that only little above two per cent of drug samples were of not-standard quality while no spurious drug could be traced. The results also showed that Jammu region emerged as the top hub for substandard drugs, going by the results of tests of samples collected through special drive from manufacturing sites and also the joint raids by the CDSCO and the state authorities in hospitals and chemist shops.

NEW DELHI, March 2014: The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers has reconstituted the Pharmaceutical Advisory Forum that will give work as a platform to discuss the issues in the pharma sector among the stakeholders and advise the Department of Pharmaceuticals in policy making efforts.

In his op-ed featured in The Hill on March 1, 2014, LaGanga anticipated that the hearing, Counterfeit Drugs, Fighting Illegal Supply Chains will spark new efforts by the government to educate patients and take stronger action to stop this growing health threat. He encouraged policymakers to better understand the real nature of the threats posed counterfeit drugs, and cited several recent incidents to illustrate how drug counterfeiting is a growing problem.

Investigational drug may increase survival for some patients with advanced melanoma

MARCH 2014 : An experimental drug aimed at restoring the immune system's ability to spot and attack cancer halted cancer progression or shrank tumors in patients with advanced melanoma, according to a multisite, early-phase clinical trial at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and 11 other institutions. All patients had experienced disease progression despite prior systemic therapies, and most had received two or more prior treatments.

Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate) now approved in more than 100 countries for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation

More than 100 countries have now approved Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa® for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism for adult patients with the most common sustained heart rhythm condition (non-valvular atrial fibrillation, nvAF).(1) The 100th approval was announced by the Jordan Food and Drug Administration.

WHO clarifies false media reports on India’s spurious drug percentage

There have been some baseless, irresponsible and malicious claims in the press stating, “WHO estimates that 1 in 5 drugs made in India is a fake” and “10% to 25% of drugs in India are spurious .” However, the fact is that the WHO had clarified as recently as on August 31 2012 that there was no such study carried out by the WHO.
