NEW DELHI, March 2014: A special drive of surveillance on manufacturing sites by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) spread across the country has found that only little above two per cent of drug samples were of not-standard quality while no spurious drug could be traced. The results also showed that Jammu region emerged as the top hub for substandard drugs, going by the results of tests of samples collected through special drive from manufacturing sites and also the joint raids by the CDSCO and the state authorities in hospitals and chemist shops.

NEW DELHI, March 2014: The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers has reconstituted the Pharmaceutical Advisory Forum that will give work as a platform to discuss the issues in the pharma sector among the stakeholders and advise the Department of Pharmaceuticals in policy making efforts.

In his op-ed featured in The Hill on March 1, 2014, LaGanga anticipated that the hearing, Counterfeit Drugs, Fighting Illegal Supply Chains will spark new efforts by the government to educate patients and take stronger action to stop this growing health threat. He encouraged policymakers to better understand the real nature of the threats posed counterfeit drugs, and cited several recent incidents to illustrate how drug counterfeiting is a growing problem.

MARCH 2014 : An experimental drug aimed at restoring the immune system's ability to spot and attack cancer halted cancer progression or shrank tumors in patients with advanced melanoma, according to a multisite, early-phase clinical trial at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and 11 other institutions. All patients had experienced disease progression despite prior systemic therapies, and most had received two or more prior treatments.

More than 100 countries have now approved Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa® for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism for adult patients with the most common sustained heart rhythm condition (non-valvular atrial fibrillation, nvAF).(1) The 100th approval was announced by the Jordan Food and Drug Administration.

There have been some baseless, irresponsible and malicious claims in the press stating, “WHO estimates that 1 in 5 drugs made in India is a fake” and “10% to 25% of drugs in India are spurious .” However, the fact is that the WHO had clarified as recently as on August 31 2012 that there was no such study carried out by the WHO.
