Modern and Patient Centric new D&C Act and Rules: Need of the Hour

The central government needs to legislate a strict law to provide better health and medical facilities to one and all. Union government should work to bring in a new, modern, comprehensive and patient-centric law on par with global regulations to regulate the drugs and cosmetics sector, said Bejon Misra, founder director of PSM India.

Consumer Online Foundation appeals the health ministry to regulate sale of drugs through online and offline Pharmacies

A latest consumer survey reveals the rise in unsafe purchase of drugs in the absence of proper rules and regulations. Consumer Online Foundation (COF) has advised the government and Union ministry of health and family welfare to regulate the safe and secure purchase of medicines through online and offline pharmacies.

Act on kamble panel reportJuly, 2016 : Drug control authorities in the country have been facing the challenge of regulating the internet sales of pharmaceutical products from 2014 with the emergence of these new class of traders. Initially there were only very few players in the scene and their sales were restricted mainly to customers outside India. Some cases of such sales in violation of the Drugs & Cosmetics Act were detected by Maharashtra FDA during 2014 and 2015. Then after repeated complaints from the retail chemists and wholesalers against the internet sales of medicines, the Drugs Controller General of India appointed a committee under Harshdeep Kamble, commissioner of Maharashtra FDA, to explore the possibility of allowing online trading in pharmaceuticals and laying down specific rules.

Intertek approved as India’s first certification body for ICMED scheme Mumbai July’16 : Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide has been approved as India’s first certification body for the Indian Certification for Medical Devices (ICMED) scheme. This quality certification scheme for medical devices is an initiative by the Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AIMED) in collaboration with the Quality Council of India (QCI) and the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) in quality certification for medical devices in the country.

ICMR releases quality standards of Indian medicinal plantsBengaluru, July 2016: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released the Quality Standards of Indian Medicinal Plants, Volume 14. Its Medicinal Plants Division has provided adequate scientific information that can help in either standard setting bodies or manufacturers to develop and arrive at quality specifications for 35 medicinal plants covered in this volume. The contents also help in regulatory approvals of these herbs globally.

Genetic test could spot future Alzheimer's disease at 35 years oldJuly, 2016 : A new genetic test could identify people who are most at risk of Alzheimer’s disease when they are just 35 years old. Scientists in the US are developing a way to predict which people are likely to develop dementia, decades before any of the symptoms emerge. Although there are currently no treatments for dementia, most drugs in development aim at slowing down symptoms so catching the disease early is crucial. People at most risk could also make lifestyle changes, such as exercising more regularly and eating more healthily.

HIV study confirms clinically viable vaccine paving the way for future treatmentsJuly’16: A new scientific study conducted by a team of leading AIDS scientists reveal results that lead the way to the development of an effective human vaccine against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the study published in Nature Medicine, researchers worked with a species of Old World monkeys, rhesus macaques to reproduce the trial results of RV144, the only HIV vaccine that has been tested and shown to reduce the rate of HIV acquisition in a phase III clinical trial.

Patanjali ads unsubstantiated, misleading: ASCI New Delhi, July 2016: Advertising watchdog ASCI has once again pulled up yoga guru Baba Ramdev-promoted Patanjali Ayurved for running "misleading" ad campaigns that disparages competitors' products. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) said that Patanjali Ayurved "unfairly denigrates" products of its rivals in the advertisements.

Diabetes as a major global health challenge JULY, 2016: A researcher from UPM is involved in a study that estimates the global prevalence of diabetes and anticipates future trends. Full professor Marcela González Gross of UPM is involved in an international scientific team led by Imperial College London that has carried out a study to assess the number of adults with diabetes and the trends of prevalence of this disease.

Experts warn about risks involved in home use of tDCS JULY, 2016: The growing trend of "do-it-yourself" transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) poses hidden risks to healthy members of the public who seek to use the technique for cognitive enhancement. Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, along with several members of the (cognitive) neuroscience research community warn about such risks involved in home use of tDCS, the application of electrical current to the brain. Their Open Letter will appear in the July 7th issue of Annals of Neurology.

FDA Grants Merrimack Fast Track Designation for Seribantumab (MM-121) in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer JULY, 2016: Merrimack Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted seribantumab, also known as MM-121, Fast Track designation for development in patients with heregulin-positive, locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease has progressed following immunotherapy.

India may soon get treatment for Hepatitis C July’16: A latest breakthrough treatment for the deadly Hepatitis C virus could soon be available in India as 11 Indian firms have been given licenses by its American manufacturer following an approval from US authorities. The drug called Epclusa which is developed to treat all genotypes of the Hepatitis C virus by Gilead Sciences in its latest breakthrough treatment was last week approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The deadly Hepatitis C virus afflicts as many as 150 million people worldwide and possibly 12 million in India.

7 blinded after cataract surgery in Hyderabad Hyderabad/July, 2016 : Seven patients at the government-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital (SDEH) in city have suffered complete loss of vision in one eye after undergoing a botched-up cataract surgery. The surgeries were done on June 30, but the blunder came to light only on Wednesday. The victims, four women and three men aged between 50 and 70 years, developed a bacterial infection caused by superbug Klebsiella during the surgery.
