Spurious drugs have emerged as a dark area in the Indian Healthcare industry. Safety and quality control are keys to eliminate this menace and this goal will surely require concentrated and collaborative efforts of all stakeholders .
In this issue we feature the importance of a good pharmacist in dispensing medicines according to the doctor’s prescription , doctors to prescribe drugs with generic names , highlighting cases through the drug alert system by CDSCO and many over the counter medicines being stopped finally .

Over the counter(OTC)sale of 40 more drugs to be stopped by GOVT.

NEW DELHI, FEB, 2013: Some 40 drugs will soon be notified under a new schedule, H1, of Drugs and Cosmetics Act to make it mandatory for chemists to maintain a register of their sales and retain a copy of the prescription. This will be in addition to the schedule H drugs which, too, can’t be sold without prescription.

Fingerprints used to Identify fake herbal medicines

Academics have developed a chromatographic fingerprinting method for spotting adulterants in herbal medicines and supplements. Researchers proposed the process in the journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry as a riposte to counterfeit herbal medicines and supplements. Analysis shows some of these pills contain adulterants - such as pharmaceutical ingredients - but improved detection is needed.

How fake drugs cause the spread of untreatable TB in developing countries

In December 2011, Dr. Zarir Udwadia, one of India’s leading tuberculosis doctors, reported in a medical journal that he had four tuberculosis patients that were resistant to all treatment, The Wall Street Journal reported. By January, he had a dozen such cases, and 15 soon after.
