Regular antibiotics use can lead to MDR-TB
A recent study has suggested that prescribing antibiotic dose once or twice can lead to multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in tuberculosis patients, compared to daily antibiotics regimen. The study results were published in the journal BMC Systems Biology.
The aim of the study was to investigate the benefits of standard anti-tubercular drugs such as Rifampicin and Isoniazid. The dosage frequency including larger doses a few times per week was compared with daily smaller doses. These pharmacological differences were assessed by computer simulations.
Unlike common infections, tubercular pathogen can hide out in granulomas during increased antibiotic concentration and relapse later.
Larger dose with once or twice a week was found to be adverse than smaller daily doses. The results were based on computer simulation model that analyze the results of pre-clinical studies.
