Online filing of consumer complaints to become mandatory from April 2023

The Central government will make e-filing of consumer complaints mandatory from April 2023, said a senior official, adding that the move is also expected to help in faster redressal of the grievances. Currently, people can file complaints before consumer commissions or courts, both in physically and online mode. The electronic filing (e-filing) option for consumer complaints was introduced on September 7, 2020.

India launched a crackdown on Monday against fake consumer reviews and unverified ratings in a bid to make the online world and e-commerce more authentic and less misleading for users. The government has drafted guidelines for companies from Alphabet Inc's Google, Meta Platform's Facebook and Instagram, and Amazon.com Inc to travel sites and food delivery apps that depend on reviews to validate products and services. Positive reviews help generate sales and interest from potential buyers.
